The Bard Unboxes...... Deathwatch's Collectors Edition

5/12/2015

It is with great pleasure that we announce the latest member of the Oilhouse family. We would like to introduce you to The Bard.
In ancient times, The Bard was trained in the art of unboxing by the secret grandmasters. In time, he forgot more than he ever knew about this secret craft; however, he still tries to practice it on collector's editions of tabletop and computer games across the land. He even occasionally demonstrates the rare and feared technique of the reboxing!

Recently toys and figures have been seen beneath his feared unboxing knife! Where will it all end?

Memories of a 80's Kid - Gruff and the 'Plex

When I was but a small nipper, I lived in the UAE. One of the more interesting things about living in the Arab countries during the 80s was how much toylines from Japan and Asia were imported, whilst other, more US -centric lines (excluding MOTU for as yet unknown reasons) took forever, if they ever actually arrived.   This led to to me, as a young child gaining a unhealthy fixation on something that followed me for many, many years.

I had a fixation on transforming robots. Sometimes, I had a fixation on very large transforming robots. And once, I had a fixation on the biggest transforming robot of the time.

Metroplex.

So I've decided to dust off the old writing skills and do some more old school style text with some funny pictures toy reviews. Now I'm not going to pick the newest stuff I've got or the popular stuff. I'm going to do what I fancy and what I fancy reviewing first is what I feel is "my" toyline.

Transformers Power Core Combiners.
Listed here after as PCC for the sake of my tiny typing fingers.

ex-rental review - His and Her Circumstances (1998)

5/6/2015

Based on the manga Kare Kano by Masami Tsuda, His and Her Circumstances (1998) is one of the earliest manga adaptations produced by Gainax. The story is a high school dramedy focusing on two star pupils, Yukino and Souichirou, that are hiding deep insecurities and how they discover each others secret lives. The characterization and character designs closely follow the original manga. The visual style however takes wild extremes to emphasize the inner lives of Yukino, Souichirou and their friends. Visuals in a single episode can vary from soft pastel landscapes to stark hard-lined interiors and use every abstract framing element in between. His and Her Circumstances shows glimpses of the unrestrained style of later Gainax series like Gurren Lagann. As the story goes on Yukino and Souichirou discover the tragic circumstances that motivate each of their lives. They learn to trust and support one another and that in turn helps them lend support to a growing circle of friends. Be warned, the anime does end abruptly. It covers less than a third of the manga series and there has been no attempt to make a sequel. The characters were compelling enough to me that I read all 21 volumes of Kare Kano and found it satisfied my need for a complete story. For as long as it last though, His and Her Circumstances has some great visuals that help emphasize some funny and teary-eyed moments. There are few anime series since that have tried to tell a story like this in such a way.

Writer: Garth Ennis
Artists: Doug Mahnke
Colours: Carla Feeeny (c)
Publisher: DC Comics

Garth Ennis' 2000AD-style take on the DCU is one of the big three of comics I always recommend to people who want to read something that isn't a usual super hero book. Hitman, Transmetropolitian and Preacher showed off what a comic could be in a mainstream release without resorting to Lycra clad muscle-men punching each other. All three also manage to be insanely funny, whilst ripping the heart out of your chest on a fairly regular basis.

This however...

This is a Lobo / Hitman crossover.
